Beginners class yoga

Curious about yoga?

Start at the begining: in our beginners class

Do you need more peace of mind and freedom of movement in your body? Are you curious about yoga? You are welcome in our yoga studio in Utrecht for a beginner class in yoga. Iyengar yoga is very suitable for beginners, because we can make the postures accessible to your individual capabilities through clear instructions and the use of props.

If you want, you can start yoga today! You can try out any of the classes marked ‘all levels’. They really are for all levels. You may think that you are too stiff or not fast enough to join an all-level class. Chances are that you are not, and besides, yoga is not a competition! You can always join at your own level, and we give you options to use.

But if you would rather get to know yoga in an accessible way in a group where everyone else is also a beginner, our Beginners class is a perfect way to start. In this ongoing class you will learn the most common poses and how to adapt them to your needs. You can easily start here, and you can also try out a class without obligation.

The Beginners Class is on Wednesday 19:30-20:45

What are the benefits of Iyengar yoga for beginners?

Focus on alignment: Iyengar yoga places a strong emphasis on the correct alignment of your body in each pose. Not only does this help prevent injuries, but it also promotes a deeper understanding of how your body functions.

Use of props: Iyengar yoga uses props such as blocks, belts and blankets to make the poses more accessible for all levels of flexibility and strength. This allows you as a beginner to do the postures at your own level without overloading.

Building strength and flexibility: By focusing on alignment and slow, controlled movements, Iyengar yoga helps you as a beginner to build both strength and flexibility. This is done in a gradual and safe manner.

Stress Reduction: The precision and attention to detail in Iyengar yoga require a high degree of concentration, which can help calm your mind and reduce stress.

Increase of body awareness: Through the emphasis on alignment and the instructor’s subtle adjustments, as a beginner you will develop a deeper awareness of your body and how it moves. This can help prevent injuries and promote better posture even when you are not on the yoga mat.

Suitable for all ages and levels: Iyengar yoga is highly adaptable and can be practiced by anyone, regardless of your age and level of fitness.

Good to know before your first yoga class

Food: we recommend that you do not eat a full meal 2 hours before class. There will be tea and water after class to stay hydrated – drinking during class is not necessary.

Injuries: Please tell the teacher before class if you have any injuries or health problems, or are pregnant. Then the teacher can let you know if the class is suitable for you or give you specific instructions that may benefit you.

Clothing: wear comfortable clothes that are not too wide. It is best if the teacher can see your legs well, like in leggings or shorts. Yoga is done barefoot: shoes and socks are not necessary.

Hygiene: you practice together with other people. It is good for everyone if you come freshly showered, do not use too much perfume or deodorant and wear clean clothes. We have a foot washing basin at the yoga school!

Props: the yoga school is equipped with enough mats and other practice materials, but you can always bring your own mat.
